Mauritius the land of the dodo

Mauritius is a great place to tour with a variety of natural and manmade features. Some of the natural features include turquoise lagoons, rich forests, unique wildlife, white sand beaches and wild waterfalls. Mauritius has over the years attracted many tourists with the tourism arrival currently standing at 1 Million up from around 70,000 tourists in the 1970’s. Mauritius offers both leisure and business tourism. The leisure activities apart from enjoying the white sand beaches and scenic scenes, the tourists can enjoy the water sports. Among the famous animals in Mauritius is the dodo bird which is unique to Mauritius but is now extinct. The bird which thrived in the Island of Mauritius  is believed could initially fly but due to lack of predators the bird lost its ability to fly. When explorers and other travelers started arriving in 1598 in Mauritius they introduced rodents such as rats and animals such as cats, coupled with their appetite for the delicious bird, the bird soon become extinct with the last bird being sighted in  1662.
