Mauritius is a great place to tour with
a variety of natural and manmade features. Some of the natural features include
turquoise lagoons, rich forests, unique wildlife, white sand beaches and wild
waterfalls. Mauritius has over the years attracted many tourists with the
tourism arrival currently standing at 1 Million up from around 70,000 tourists
in the 1970’s. Mauritius offers both leisure and business tourism. The leisure
activities apart from enjoying the white sand beaches and scenic scenes, the tourists
can enjoy the water sports. Among the famous animals in Mauritius is the dodo bird
which is unique to Mauritius but is now extinct. The bird which thrived in the
Island of Mauritius is believed could initially
fly but due to lack of predators the bird lost its ability to fly. When
explorers and other travelers started arriving in 1598 in Mauritius they
introduced rodents such as rats and animals such as cats, coupled with their
appetite for the delicious bird, the bird soon become extinct with the last
bird being sighted in 1662.
